Passion, Purpose, Desires & Meaning
When it comes to passion, desires, purpose and meaning, they are all related, but distinct. Subtle differences that will help you line things up can bring it all together for you – and most importantly, you need to connect with your dreams and passion!
Passion & Desire
Passion is like fire or love- there are things that you are passionate about. Me? I’m passionate about spirituality & parrots. I have a daily spiritual practice in which I flow my energy, meditate and focus on raising my energetic frequency. I also have my parrots; I take care of them and spend time with them every day- because they make my heart smile. They also melt my heart.
My desire, the urgings or things I’m pulled towards (which come from ‘des-sire’ or ‘of God’) are to be spiritually connected, be a spiritual teacher/coach and to have and be with parrots. I’m passionate, or I love, the way it feels to raise my energetic frequency, to get in the flow and to gain a deeper understanding of my life as I also bring meaning to my life. My passion for my spirituality drives me and drives my practice.
Think of your desires as being a metaphor for your heart and the blood flowing through as your passion. If you get excited or scared, your blood pressure rises and you can feel it in your body. You can also feel your pulse, which is your heart, and the blood being pumped through. We tend to talk about being passionate and manifesting desires because they are the heart and blood of your soul and your fulfillment. You can also think of these as, your desire is who you be and what you are all about; your passion is what you love do-ing.
Your desire is what you want to be, experience or have; your passion is what you love doing as you be or what you love about the experience.
How Do You Find Your Passion?
Some people are born knowing what they are passionate about – I wasn’t. It took me time to find what makes my heart sing… and what fills my universe with rhyme, reason and purpose. Magic.
In high school I had a boyfriend who knew where he wanted to go to college for film school and he knew what he wanted to do with his life. His family was in the Hollywood business, so he had the connections and he wasn’t waiting. He was working on his future even then! By comparison I had no direction, nothing pulling me toward a career or even an interest. I wished I did.
In college I took advantage of the career center. I took every personality test they had to try to find what career might interest me. I wanted to know where I might feel at home in the world and I certainly wanted to know what I major I should choose. However, I exhausted the tests and came up empty handed. Four psychological initials did nothing for me and didn’t provide direction. The suggested fields didn’t spark my interest, so I majored in whatever got me out of school the fastest. Funny thing was that Spanish Literature got me graduated quickest, so I learned to write, which has served me as an author and blogger…
Finding My Passion
I’m very fortunate because I have two passions, spirituality and parrots. Love them both and I can go on and on about them…
It wasn’t always like that. Years ago I used to be interested in something new all the time, but the curiosity wouldn’t last long. I made a girlfriend a necklace and became excited about making jewelry, so I bought supplies. I then expressed wanting to make my own silver pieces to my husband, so he encouraged me to investigate casting. I hesitated because I’d already spent a lot of money on supplies- but he brushed my hesitation off. He said that I should buy more expensive stones, because they sell at a higher price for the same work on my part, and that I should take a class and learn about casting. He was right: I knew at the time that being a jewelry artist wasn’t long-term, even though I had raw diamond and gold-cast pieces in galleries, among other stones and silver.
The short-term desire was my guidance taking me in the direction to develop my creativity, to tap into my inner world (think of your inner world as a place of creativity, imagination: a staging space for who you are becoming and what energies you are developing in yourself).
Spirituality found me – I was taken to a talk-of-sorts one night, which was really the first class on spirituality in a six-week course, and I was hooked. Within a couple weeks the universe fell into place for me. Life had reason and I had discovered my connection to all that is. My spiritual path has been who I am and has been my greatest dedication since then.
My parrot-passion came about through my daughter, who wanted a pet a couple years ago. I loved her budgie and wanted my own, and next thing you know, we have over 10 species of parrots… they fascinate me.
Tapping Into Your Desires And Passion
Step 1 is to listen to yourself. Unless you grow up as a Buddhist monk, we are taught not to listen to ourselves. We are encouraged to restrain our creativity, curiosity and energy by sitting at a desk for hours in school. School teaches children to socialize, but the academics should support who we are. Instead they teach us to only have one mode: think, study and do as we are told. People vary and education should seek to meet different learning modalities and skills. Unfortunately, wisdom is defined as something that can only be learned and not as something that can also be brought forth from within. As people learn the value of meditation and their energy, this is changing. For now, you must value your own inner voice and you must be seeking to add quality to your life in order to tap into your desires and passion.
They say, ‘Where there’s a will…’ and I finish that with, “You’ll make it happen.” All you have to do is choose it. The thing about choice is that we make conscious choices, which may or may not agree with subconscious choices we hold and live by in our subconscious. Manifesting what we desire often impeded by subconscious beliefs and values we carry.
When you choose at the level of all of you so that you are making a conscious and subconscious choice, the resources will show up for you to try different things. You’ll decide that no good reason not to do what you want to do will stop you. You will take classes, read books, watch videos on YouTube and you’ll find things that draw your attention. Sure, if you are feeling blue, it’ll be hard to want to find inspiration. If your energetic frequency is low, you’ll have to raise it. Once you do, follow, investigate, try and sample different things that catch your attention. Your passion awaits. Your desires are calling.
You will know when you’ve found what you desire and are passionate about. You will have a strong desire to be, experience or have it; you’ll be urged from within. You will find that you can let the idea go, but it comes back, like a boomerang. Be careful, you can justify yourself away from your desires and what you love about them. People use justifications to make themselves feel better about why they can’t have or do what they want.
Be wiser than that. You don’t have to have, be or experience what you want in your outer world. At least not at first. You can conjure it up in your inner world – actually, if you are going to manifest your desire, it must be significant in your inner world first. That’s like saying that you have to gather enough energy (at the frequency of your desire) to be able to make it – or like saying you must gather the appropriate ingredients in your kitchen if you want to bake a cake. So, have fun in your inner world. Imagine, day dream, write about, talk about… parrots. Oh, sorry! Again, my passion- I can’t help it. They are always on my mind!
Have fun. Sure, you have to work during the day or take care of things when you get home, but if you choose to, you’ll make the time to focus on your desire, because you are tapping into your passion for it. You’ll make time during your commute, in your shower or as you are falling asleep – at first. Soon you’ll find that you have more time to focus on those desires, which will turn into your life purpose, something you do with the world, and meaning¸ which develops a connection between you and your God, Source, Universe…
This is so cool, it’ll take you full circle. You received a desire from something greater than you and you truly seek to feel connected to that unseen, all-knowing force!
Keep fueling your passion and enjoying yourself, going deeper into your desires, and you will find that the universe will support you, as you will be developing a relationship with the universe.
And this is how you tap into being a force to be recon’d with and how you light up your life with such passion that you wake up before your alarm, every day.
